Blakenator needs your help

Our favourite out sportsman, Blake Skjellerup, is appealing for help to get him to gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in 2014.

Being a top-level sportsperson requires a lot of dedication and talent. It also requires a lot of money, and this is where we can all help with a couple of clicks! Blake is up for the AMP People’s Choice Scholarship which will give him $10,000 towards achieving that gold medal in Sochi.

All you need to do is head to the AMP website and vote! You can only vote once and you need to have a Facebook account to do it — but we’re pretty sure y’all do! Quite simple really, now get voting!

It is sad that he has to go in a tacky online competition to try and reach the olympics. surely some sort of national sport organization can fund his trip instead of this private entity which is exploiting athletes and there dreams as some sort of sick advertising campaign.

I would vote for him because I am a fan of his , but I wont be, I feel if I voted I would only be authenticating what AMP is doing here.

I just don’t agree with this sort of practice at all.

    • Here you go then precious. Seeing as you’re a passionate Blake Skjellerup fan – and keen to save the poor boy from corporate exploitation – there’s a special GLBT community facilitated fund that YOU can donate to: http://www.givealittle.co.nz/org/gaba

So now a top athlete has been reduced to a charity case, no I wont be donating I pay tax which I assume part of goes to national sports organizations.

Im not condoning this by donating whats next?…. online popularity contests for people to win chemotherapy?

Could the politicians and the business heads please start running this managing this country properly and make NZ the country it used to be? even a fraction of what it used to be seems attractive!

        • Newsflash! Sponsorship and fundraising are a necessary part of professional sports all over the world. I’m not saying that Blake doesn’t deserve more government funding, but accepting help from his own community certainly doesn’t make him a “charity case”. Blake has done plenty of volunteer work in the community to earn that support.

            The olympics are not “professional”.

….and sponsorship and funding are not a part of professional sports all over the world like you put fourth…. advertising and endorsements are, which are totally different things.

  3. Blake totally has my support. Blake is one of only four out male Olympians, and he’s worked really hard to get to where he is. I’d much rather people donated their time and money to helping him out, than sending that couple from ‘The Block’ on holiday.
