Slovenia rejects gay adoption

A public referendum in Slovenia struck down the chances of that country allowing same-sex couples to adopt children.

The referendum was held to ask the public if they supported a new family law, part of which would have allowed same-sex couples to adopt in certain situations. Around 55% of voters said they didn’t want the new law.

Conservative religious groups in the country, including Catholics and Muslims, worked together to counter the new law, setting up a petition to encourage voters to reject it. “Marriage and family are of utmost importance for the development of the human person and society,” the petition said. “For this reason, we all have an obligation to protect the values of marriage and of family as a community of a husband and a wife, and children.”
