Last night’s Glitter dance party at the Opera House and Saturday’s Out in the Square were both a huge success, with thousands of people attending the events.
Glitter, a fundraiser for Out in the Square 2013, sold out of 350 pre-sales early yesterday morning. The few remaining door tickets were snapped up within minutes of opening. Hundreds showed up without tickets and were largely turned away, although some were lucky enough to get in later as some of the less-seasoned party-goers headed home.
The final tally hasn’t yet been completed, but Glitter is expected to have easily broken even and raised hundreds of dollars towards next year’s fair.
Wellington’s famous gay and lesbian fair, Out in the Square, was also a huge success. Organisers say it was the most popular yet, with more stallholders than ever before. “We are extremely happy to have hosted more than 60 stalls,” Chairperson Andy Boreham says. “And next year should be even bigger!”
We’ll have photos of the party, and of Saturday’s Out in the Square, online later this evening. Come back soon!

Shame the shows were shit.
Did they have shows? U couldn’t even see the stage.
Glad you enjoyed them! It would have been nicer to just have said nothing at all.
Well boo to you too. Let me know when you put on two major events in a weekend, and both of them are a roaring success.
Actually, the shows were shit but im pretty sure mine was the most shit!
Besides, too late, can’t take it back girl,…. laterz ;D
I thought the fair was really fantastic.. I thought the diversity and positivity of the crowd was great.. I think the layout and the fact that it was in Civic Square allowed people to mix and mingle really well.
I remember a time when I would have felt really self-conscious about going to a queer event; and was thinking that Civic Square allows people who aren’t necessarily “out” to participate – even just glimpsing it from Frank Kitts park.. and the idea of multiple entries and exits so you don’t feel you’re being branded as you walk through an entranceway..
The feeling I got from the crowd this year was something I’d only really experienced in larger Pride gatherings overseas (like San Fran).. where there was a great mixture of gays, straights, families, singles, tourists… all being positive and having fun.
One suggestion for next year – as they do in san fran – is have koha buckets on the entranceways ..
Thx for a great weekend
We’re really glad you had fun and hope to see you again next year.
Events like this overseas are usually an alcohol focussed gathering. The great thing about Out in the Square is its the opposite of this and is a great day out for all, where the community, young and old can get together and enjoy each others company, be entertained etc in a great location! I really agree with what Anonymous said above too
Another great fair – here’s to 2013. Well done Out Wellington!
Well done to all those involved.
Both Out in the Square and Glitter where excellent in everyway.
Looking forward to next year!

Congratulations to the organizers of out in the square and glitter.
My suggestion is to find a venue with a stage if you want shows .
The space worked as dance venue but the shows were not visable to most people.
Having shows might not need to be a priority as venues that work are hard to find.
There was actually a stage, except it wasn’t very high. I could see the shows fine. You just had to get up to the front more.
