The group, recently formed by Victoria University students in an attempt to achieve same-sex adoption and marriage rights, held a memorial for “victims of homophobia” last Saturday.
Passers-by were invited to add their mark, as a symbol of support, to a large white banner which will be flown at the group’s rally to Parliament on October 20.
“The support we encountered on Saturday for legal equality for queer New Zealanders was overwhelming”, said Legalise Love President Joseph Habgood. “In fact, the most common response was confusion and surprise that equality in adoption and marriage laws did not exist in New Zealand already.”
The group now plans to run more awareness events on Cuba Street in the lead-up to their rally.
“If you would like to be involved in the campaign, you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, and our online petition for marriage and adoption equality can be found on our website, www.legaliselove.org.nz.”
