The Australian Labor Party, which is currently in power in Australia by a very narrow majority, has voted to support gay marriage and allow MPs to make a conscience vote on the issue, if it were to come up in a private member’s bill.
While it won’t guarantee gay marriage in Australia and it’s a big step forward, especially given that Prime Minister Julia Gillard (pictured) has continuously voiced her opposition to gay marriage.
Marriage is declared to be between a man and a woman under federal Australian legislation, although various states have civil unions available. Same-sex couples already have the same rights as heterosexual couples in areas such as pension schemes and medical benefits.
