We managed to get a five minute slot with newbie Wellington drag queen Mama DeZiyah while on her exhausting press tour for this Saturday’s DRAG-O-MATIC show at S&M’s. We asked her all the important questions.
Age: Well physically I’m twenty. My mental age is probably up for debate.
Hometown: I grew up in Paraparaumu but in my heart I’ve always been a Wellington girl.
Current location: For the time being I’m in Plimmerton. Hopefully a move is on the horizon.
Tell us about what you do: I do all sorts of things! I run and present a weekly radio show, I help run a queer youth group, I perform as much as possible, I read a lot, I watch too many DVDs, I pine away for the perfect man. Pining is hard work, it keeps me busy.
How did you get into performing? I first started acting when I was 5. My first play was The Addams Family and my character was thief number 5. It was a historic moment for all involved. Drag just seemed to be another extension of that.
When and how did you come out? For me to answer this question, you’d first have to think that at some stage I was “in” haha. I knew I liked boys ever since I saw the Disney cartoon Aladdin. I fell in love with him instantly. I came out as “bisexual” to my friends when I was 11. Then, when I was 16, I had an epiphany in the shower. I knew I was gay, came out to everyone and never looked back.
Do you have any queer role models? Who? Hmmm… It’s odd but I’d say Nathan Lane was a huge inspiration for me when I was coming out, so he would have to be one of my queer role models.
Who was your first kiss with? Oh dear god! My first kiss was with my girlfriend at the time. This was in my bisexual stage. It was all rather awkward and uncomfortable.
Three things always in your fridge are: Milk, raro and cat food.
Where were you when The Glamazons died? In the closet, raiding their wardrobe for new outfits.
Which gay stereotype best describes you? Musical theatre snob.
Music: Anything musical theatre. Particularly Stephen Sondheim.
TV: Boston Legal, Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy, Batman The Animated Series, Absolutely Fabulous.
Movies: The Wicker Man (1973 version. Not the rubbish Nicolas Cage remake!), Beauty and the Beast, Sunset Boulevard, Batman Returns, Stranger Than Fiction.
Sport: Extreme sitting.
Celebrity: Halle Berry, Christopher Lee.
Bar: S&M’s! Or the Sandbar in Plimmerton.
Drag queen: I would love to put all the queens I know personally here because they’re all so amazing BUT I couldn’t list them all so I’ll say Devine purely because Ursula from The Little Mermaid is based off her. That makes her amazing in my books.
Gay icon: I met a young gay man the other day and he didn’t know who Barbra Streisand or Judy Garland were! SHOCKING! But I’d go for Patti LuPone (She’s a gay mans wet dream!)
Holiday destination: I don’t mind destination so much as long as I have a good book and good company.
Colour: Puce! No particular reason.
Position: I used to play hockey when I was younger… I was always goalie. I think that was my favourite position.
Underwear style: Cheap and unbranded
Shoes: See above
Jeans: See above
Designer: The person that designs ALL The Warehouse clothes.
Mama DeZiyah is performing as part of DRAG-O-MATIC at S&M’s this Saturday 6 August. The shows are at 10:30pm and 11pm and a $5 door entry applies, plus gold coin tipping is appreciated so the girls can take some coin home!
